mike watt + the missingmen – Blue Oyster Cult cover song

Health Insurance

The Red and The Black. Joe Biza on guest guitar to Watt’s left, Bob Lee, guest drummer to his back right. the missingmen are: Tom Watson on guitar and Raul Morales on drums. Thisperformance is from The FOR Benefit (Friends Of Richie) took place at Safari Sam’s in Hollywood, on Saturday March 31st 2007. Richie Hass is an amazing multi-instrumentalist musician. Alumnus of Zoogz Rift’s band, he is best known these days for playing in Saccharine Trust and also with Joe Baiza’s Universal Congress – probably the top vibraphonist in Southern California. Richie was recently diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer of the bone marrow, and since he is a self employed musician, he has no health insurance. The LA music community was rocked back on their heels by this news. Everybody loves Richie. So a group of musicians, together with the IMF, put together this benefit in Richie’s honor. And while the benefit was held in Richie’s honor, he has opted to donate the proceeds to the International Myeloma Foundation for much-needed research to find the cure for this disease. 3. MetallicBill Says:

Well, Punk is rough and ready music, more so less skilled one can note. I saw Malmsteen live in a small setting, it was the loudest show I’d been to in my life!!

  4. Nick Aguilar Says:

Man, some of you guys just don’t fucking get it. Maybe if you actually payed attention to the music instead of the voice first, you would actually not be such a dumbass. It’s called doing music in you’re own style. Mike watt played with BOC so ya, he did a cover. Not everyone is gonna like the same kind of music. Get over it

  5. outlawwolf621 Says:

besides I neevr said these guys suck,I only thingkn that the performance here sucks, maybe the mixing was bad.

You haters are clueless when it comes to this song, this is a classic Minutemen cover, and was even released on their 3 way tie album, and yes the BOC guys know and love this version, Alex E. Bloom was one of Watt’s idols.

  8. PDXorcist Says:

Just another aging dude who has to preach the truth as he sees it. . . I’d love to see your chops.

  9. outlawwolf621 Says:

I’m gonna agree with boondock, this is sad for a cover and I would actually be ashamed to turn this in on you tube. Those people in the audience had to be hammered to tolerate this. I am surprised there wasn’t chicken wire in front of the stage. I know I would have definately thrown somethingAnyone in the lower bucks county/philadelphia,pa. area looking for a drummer please e mail me.

  10. mikewattdisciple Says:

Right, because playing more notes makes you a better musician. Go listen to Malmsteen if you favor wankery over passion and energy.

  11. FromBeyond99 Says:

I promise you that Watt has played this song more times than BOC. Oh and BTW the guys from BOC dig this and have jammed with Mike in the past.

  12. kitcatcher Says:

That’s easily the coolest thing I’ve seen all week! I love BOC and I love the MinuteMen!

  13. inagod Says:

BAD,Listen to BOC play it live, practice makes perfect

  14. hitwitstuff Says:

    You’re welcome.

  15. TheBoondockSaints Says:

That was easily the WORST fucking cover I’ve ever heard in my life. That asshole needs to go back to playing the recorder in elementary school. He played 8 notes the whole fucking time and stood there looking like the dipshit he is. Mike Watt ate shit, not surprising, the only person with any half-decent skill would be the guitarist you didn’t notice. Fuck these guys, and fuck you for posting this garbage.

  16. iamthepreacher Says:

    stereo15, that is.

  17. iamthepreacher Says:

    you are good(tu es bon).

  20. rss313 Says:

Yes, it’s a cover, and it still sounds great here!

  21. kindestcut Says:

Oh my God. . . you gotta be kidding me. . .

  22. azmarkus Says:

You’re completely wrong, it’s a Blue Oyster Cult original written by Albert Bouchard, Eric Bloom, and their manager-svengali Sandy Pearlman. As hiwitstuff noted it’s on BOC’s second album ‘Tyranny and Mutation’; to be completely accurate ‘The Red and the Black’ is a reworking of BOC’s ‘I’m on the Lamb but i Ain’t No Sheep’ (BOC’s first album) with a different musical arrangement.

  23. hitwitstuff Says:

“The Red and The Black” can be found on Blue Oyster Cult’s 1973 LP “Tyranny and Mutation. ” The earliest Minutemen recordings I’ve ever seen or heard is 1980.
